Just off the shores of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin the astounding beauty of the Apostle Islands hits you like a religious experience. The amazing set of 22 hunks of rock and sand dot the sparkling waters of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee. This nature lover’s dream is best accessed from Bayfield, Wisconsin. That charming little gateway town has a beauty all its own. Unfortunately, the prices you pay to stay in the city of Bayfield are sometimes not so beautiful. Lodging prices near the harbor can often make you feel like all ten commandments were shattered during the passing of the collection basket. But when your tourist day in the Apostle Islands is over, if you’re willing to repent and drive just 23 miles south along the Chequamegon Bay, you’ll find a hotel that makes a very impactful splash. The AmericInn’s Ashland Hotel, Splashland Waterpark and Event Center offers a family lodging experience unlike any other in the area.
Traditional hotels blanket the streets within a stone’s throw of the water in every community near the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. A variety of bed and breakfast options also await weary travelers. But if you’re looking for something truly unique, look no further than AmericInn’s Splashland Waterpark Hotel. It’s conveniently located at 3009 East Lake Shore Drive, just off Highway 2 in Ashland, Wisconsin.
The TRUE Family-Friendly Vacation!
This place isn’t the swankiest lodging you’ll find in Wisconsin, but it may well be the family friendliest! The kids will be thrilled, starting with the Splashland Adventure water park. Festively painted walls enclose a couple of twisty, turny water slides, an indoor pool, water cannon, dumping buckets, hot tub, sauna, arcade, and Shipwreck snack bar. There’s plenty of indoor fun that’s never affected by the weather.
Walk out back and you’ll feel like you vacated the hotel for a relaxing beach resort. The tastefully landscaped patio and grounds are extremely welcoming to any guest. Tables, benches and firepits (with free firewood provided) turn the spacious patio and surrounding area into a great gathering place to share a snack, a drink, or stories of your day’s adventures. The hotel even provides marshmallow roasting sticks and all the complimentary fixins to make your own S’mores at a specific time of the evening.
This Hotel Has Got Game!
A host of life-size yard games ramp up the entertainment for those who are a little more rambunctious. Jump for joy with the giant patio block checkerboard. Give the term “throw pillow” a whole new meaning during a game of oversized bean bags (or, I guess since the hotel is in Wisconsin, it would be called “cornhole”). See who can lasso the most points on the 5-ft. tall ladderball frames. You can even shoot some hoops on the basketball court. There’s something fun for everyone.
Comfort, Affordability, Fun … Now
That’s a Winning Combination!
Not into games? How about signing out a bike or a paddleboat and taking it for a spin? Borrow a fishing pole and try your luck off one of the hotel’s docks. Plunge into the refreshing Lake Superior waters or catch some rays on one of the lounge chairs or hammocks down at the sandy beach. There are plenty of no-charge options for any hotel guest.
You can even end your day with an amazing vantagepoint for a colorful Lake Superior sunset. Park yourself inside the specially designed and expertly placed “picture frame” to capture the perfect selfie!
Location. Location. LOCATION.
Even though the hotel is chock-full of things to do right on the grounds, it’s also conveniently located almost smack dab in the middle of the area’s biggest attractions. As we mentioned earlier, Bayfield, the gateway to the Apostle Island National Lakeshore and Madeline Island is less than 25 miles to the north. Definitely spend some time there and check out the sea caves and Madeline Island. Head 25 miles in the opposite direction and you’ll hit Copper Falls State Park near Mellen, WI. This gem is also packed with gorgeous scenery.
As for the AmericInn Ashland Splashland hotel itself? The rooms (there are 94 in all) are pretty standard, not exceptional. Microwaves and refrigerators are available in some. Ours also had a whirlpool tub in it, which came in handy to sooth some sore hiking muscles. Ask for a room on the backside of the hotel. You’ll be rewarded with peaceful bayside views right from your window. The lobby is spacious and welcoming. Free coffee, water and continental breakfast treat the guests. And best of all, the rates are pretty dang reasonable for this area. There’s even a 4,580 square foot event center available for rent.
